"Dick Dickerson"

JULY 19, 1940 – SEPTEMBER 20, 2019

 

 

Dick was born in Nashville to the late Simon and Evelyn Dickerson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Gary Dickerson, and brother-in-law, Charlie Williams.

He is survived by his sister, Diane Dickerson; nephews, Peter (Chelsea) Williams and Scott (Susanne) Williams; and great nephew, Adrian Williams.

He graduated from East Nashville High School and George Peabody College for Teachers, where he was president of the student body and “Mr. Peabody.” Dick was president of the International Club for Vanderbilt, Peabody and Scarritt. He was a Fulbright student at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Dick began his career as a teacher at East Nashville Junior High. He was elected president of the Metropolitan Nashville Teachers Association. He became the executive director of the Mississippi Education Association, and later went to work for the National Education Association. Dick’s final years of his career with the NEA were as the executive director of the Kentucky Education Support Personnel Association.

He was the founder and president of various dog clubs in TN starting in his teenage years. He continued to serve on the Board of Directors of Tri-Star Kennel Club of Williamson County until his passing. Through his years in the dog world, his kennel has produced many champions. In addition to dogs he became involved in the American Poultry Association, and raised many different exotic breeds. Dick was a member of the East Nashville High Alumni Association Board of Directors.

He was a world traveler who never met a stranger. Upon learning of his illness he said, “But there are so many more people to meet!”
